Suzy and Ben Maui wedding

From A Romantic Proposal In Paris To An Elegant Maui Wedding

Suzy and Ben Maui wedding

After Ben surprised Suzy with an engagement ring on the balcony of their Paris hotel room as they gazed at the Eiffel Tower in the distance, it only seemed right to get married in an equally (if not more so) romantic location — Maui. Suzy visited Hawaii with her family the summer before, and she absolutely fell in love with the place. Since that visit, she had only dreamed of what it would be like to get married in Hawaii.

Suzy and Ben thought how romantic it would be to have their wedding in a beautiful island paradise – Maui. After visiting Sugar Beach Events’s website and viewing photos of the amazing Maui weddings held at our oceanfront venue, they decided it was the ideal venue they were looking for, with the perfect Maui wedding packages to choose from for their intimate celebration.

Tell us about your dress:
Long story short, it was an ivory ball gown with beads and buttoned long trails – I originally picked a very simple A-line dress, (I thought it was appropriate to pack for the destination wedding, too) then my mom insisted that I should get a more flamboyant dress and took me back to the dress shop to immediately return the A-line dress. In the end, it didn’t take a long time to find “THE” dress that both my mom and I loved!

As Suzy and the girls were getting ready in our private bridal salon, Ben and the guys were in the upstairs balcony alcove getting ready. Out of the many colors and wedding theme ideas to choose from, Suzy and Ben decided to pick White/Pink/Navy as their wedding colors for decor and also for attire. We love Ben’s pink and white polka-dot bow tie and sharp navy blue suit.

The lawn was set with a beautiful canopy adorned with flowing white drapery and pastel florals. Mahogany chiavari chairs awaited the guests. A special mahalo to Country Bouquets of Maui for the gorgeous florals.

At the guest table, wedding guests received the perfect Maui wedding favor to wear during the ceremony, sunglasses. These were no ordinary sunglasses. These sunglasses came in an assortment of neon colors inscribed with ‘Suzy and Ben Hawaii’ along with the wedding date. As it turns out, everyone wore them during the ceremony AND throughout their Hawaii trip, which thrilled Suzy and Ben.

There was also a special table set up for a sand ceremony where Suzy and Ben intermingled pink and navy sands together in a beautiful keepsake bottle.

What more lovely location for the wedding reception dinner than out on the lawn with the sound of ocean waves and the glorious setting sun? Tables were adorned in white and pink with gorgeous floral centerpieces. After dinner, the celebration moved indoors for dancing and cake-cutting. There was also a Polaroid Photo Station on a wagon-styled bicycle where the wedding guests were able to take photos of themselves and then hang them up above a bright LOVE sign.

A vanilla wedding cake with strawberry butter-cream filling and vanilla butter-cream frosting was topped with the most adorable bride and groom rabbits. In fact, the wedding invitations and many other decorations had rabbits in a pastel tone, all lovingly designed by Suzy’s friend. We were thrilled to find out ‘Rabbit’ is Suzy’s nickname. What a sweet touch.

Tell us about any cultural traditions you included in your wedding:
We wore Hanbok, Korean traditional clothes, during a part of the wedding reception. Back in the day, Hanbok was the proper wedding attire for bride and grooms, but because of the time, we didn’t get to do much of traditional way. However, when we made a visit to Korea after the wedding in Hawaii, we wore Hanbok to have proper way to meet our elderly relatives including grand parents.

What wedding planning advice would you give other couples?
I would recommend planning big items (flight tickets, accommodation, etc) in advance and focus on the details as the wedding date approaches. If you try to do everything all at once, it just gets too hectic and you will find yourself stressed out. (Although it is almost impossible to avoid getting stressed out anyways! ☺). Also it’s very convenient if all of your guests stay in nearby areas – all our guests stayed in Kihei which made pre/post wedding activities very manageable.
